Accessibility Fixes in the Tidewell Member App

A round-up of accessibility improvements to Tidewell's member booking screens, prompted by feedback from customers and their members.

Last autumn a customer forwarded us a message from one of their members who uses a screen reader. Booking a room had taken her twenty minutes and two phone calls. That message turned into a few months of work, and this release is the result.

What's changed

  • The booking calendar works with a keyboard and screen readers. Each slot reads out its date, time, resource and whether it's free.
  • Better contrast across the member app, including the "booked" and "waitlist" labels that were far too pale before.
  • Larger tap targets on phones, especially the cancel and swap buttons on rota shifts.
  • Reduced motion respected. If your device asks for less animation, the app listens.
  • Plain-language error messages. "Booking limit reached: you can hold two future sessions" instead of an error code.

What's next

The admin side comes next. Coordinators deserve the same care, and we know some of our admin screens are still hard going. We're also looking for members who use assistive technology and would test early versions. If that's you, or someone at your venue, let us know in the customer community.

Thank you to the member who wrote that first message. She tried the new calendar before release and booked a room in under a minute.
