Community-led growth: lessons from the field

Our fastest growth came from members inviting colleagues, so we made inviting easier.

When we looked back at where new members came from over the past year, the answer was almost embarrassing for anyone who has spent money on ads. Our fastest growth came from members inviting colleagues, not from marketing. Every member who felt the community had helped them became, without being asked, a recruiter.

That changed how we think about growth. Instead of asking how to reach more strangers, we started asking how to make it easier for happy members to bring someone along.

What we changed

  • Invite links for spaces. A member can send a colleague straight into the space where the useful conversation is happening, not to a generic sign-up page.
  • Referral badges. A small badge on the profiles of members who've brought others in. Nobody joins for a badge, but people noticed and said thanks.
  • Public event pages. Events can be shared outside the network, so a meetup becomes the first contact for people who've never heard of us.

What we learned

Invitations only work if the first experience is good. When an invited colleague landed in a quiet space, they rarely came back, and the person who invited them felt it too. So we now only suggest invite links for spaces that have had a reply in the past week, and we nudge the hosts of quieter ones before pointing anyone their way.

If you run a community, look at your last fifty sign-ups and ask where they really came from. You may find your best marketing team is already inside.
