Moderation basics for new hosts

Calm, consistent habits for handling problems before they grow.

Moderation is the part of running a community that new hosts worry about most. In practice, most of it is quiet and routine. This lesson covers the habits that prevent most problems and make the rest easier to handle.

Moderate early and gently

A friendly private note the first time someone crosses a line works far better than a public warning the fifth time. Most people simply didn't realise, and they'll adjust if you treat them with respect.

Be consistent

Members notice when rules apply to some people and not others. Use your guidelines as the reference every time, including for your friends and your most active members.

Write things down

Keep a short private log of warnings and actions. It helps you spot patterns, makes handovers between moderators easier and protects you if a decision is questioned later.

Look after yourself

Some content is upsetting to read. It's fine to step away, ask another moderator to take over or sleep on a decision. The rushed call made while you're angry is usually the one you regret.

Homework

Write down the three situations you're most likely to face in your community and how you'd handle each, step by step. Share them with your co-hosts so you're all working from the same playbook.
