Office Hours Recap: Five Questions Community Managers Asked This Spring

The questions that came up again and again in this spring's Community Managers Circle office hours, with short answers.

We've run fortnightly office hours in the Community Managers Circle since January, and the same questions keep coming back. That usually means they're worth writing down. Here are the top five, with the short version of what we talked through. Add your own answers below, because the best ideas usually come from the room, not from me.

1. "My group has gone quiet. How do I bring it back?"

Don't post more announcements. Message five members personally and ask each of them one specific question. Then start a thread built around their answers, with their permission. Quiet groups wake up when people see themselves in the feed.

2. "How do I handle one very loud critic?"

Move the conversation to a private message early, acknowledge what's fair in the criticism, and be clear about what isn't acceptable. Most loud critics care a lot. The ones who don't usually leave on their own.

3. "When should I remove someone?"

When their behaviour is costing you other members. Write your rules down before you need them, warn once in private, and act consistently. Being liked by everyone is not the job.

4. "What should I measure besides member count?"

Try three numbers: how many people posted for the first time this month, how many newcomers got a reply within a day, and how many members came back four weeks after joining. Each of them tells you more than a total.

5. "Where do I find moderators?"

Look at who already answers questions without being asked. Invite them personally, give them a small, clear job first, and thank them in public.

Next office hours are on Thursday. Bring a question, or bring a story about something that went wrong. Those are always the most useful sessions.
