The first 48 hours: welcoming new members
Newcomers make up their minds fast. Most decide whether a community is for them within their first couple of days. If nobody notices them in that window, they rarely come back. The good news is that a warm welcome takes very little time once you have a routine.
Greet people by name, quickly
A personal hello within a day beats a perfect welcome a week later. Mention something from their profile or intro post so it doesn't feel automated.
Give them one easy first step
"Introduce yourself" is a big ask for shy people. Try something smaller: answer a simple question in a pinned thread, react to the latest photo post, or say which event they'd come to. Small first actions lead to bigger ones.
Introduce them to one person
The fastest way to make someone feel at home is to connect them with another member who shares an interest. "You two should meet" is one of the most useful sentences a host can write.
Share the work
You don't have to do all the welcoming yourself. Many communities have a small welcome team who take turns. It spreads the load and gives regular members a meaningful role.
Try it for a week
Write a short welcome message you can personalise in under a minute, and use it for every new member for the next seven days. Note how many of them post again.
