Turning lurkers into contributors
Most members read and never post, and that's fine. Reading is participation too, and plenty of people get real value from a community without ever writing a word. But in every space I host there are lurkers who are one small nudge away from contributing, and they're worth that nudge.
Lower the bar for a first contribution
Ask easy questions people can answer in a sentence. "What do you use for event sign-ups?" gets far more replies than "What's your community strategy?" Make reactions and polls easy to reach, because a first small action makes the second one more likely.
Invite people by name
A personal message works better than any announcement. When someone has a relevant background, I'll write something like: "You ran a library book club for years. Would you share how you picked titles?" Most people are glad to be asked, and many say yes.
Reply to first posts quickly
A first post with no replies is often a last post. Our moderators keep a short list of unanswered first posts and work through it every morning, even if the reply is only a thank-you and a follow-up question.
None of this turns everyone into a regular, and it shouldn't. The goal is simply that anyone who wants to speak up finds it easy to do so.
