From followers to members: building real connection

Followers watch and members take part; giving people roles is how one becomes the other.

Followers watch. Members participate. The difference isn't the button they clicked at sign-up; it's whether they feel they belong to something and have a part to play in it.

Most platforms only offer one way to take part: posting. That suits a few confident people and leaves everyone else on the sidelines. If you want followers to become members, give them other ways to contribute.

Roles people can grow into

  • Hosts who run an event, online or in their own city.
  • Welcomers who greet newcomers in the Welcome Lounge and point them to the right spaces.
  • Space leads who look after a topic and keep its threads tidy.
  • Recappers who write up events for people who couldn't make it.

Every role you create is a new reason for someone to stay. It also spreads the work, so the community stops depending on a few tired organisers.

Start small. Ask one quiet but reliable member to take on one role this month, and see what happens.

    • Adding one data point from our own spaces: members who took on a role in the Welcome Lounge are almost all still active a year later.
