Loneliness and money: notes from our caregivers' winter evening

A recap of the Caregivers Connect winter evening, with the two pictures I used to talk about isolation and the hidden costs of caring.

Last Thursday about forty members of Caregivers Connect joined our online winter evening. I'd promised a short talk on the two things caregivers bring up most often in private messages and least often in public threads: loneliness and money. A few of you asked for the two pictures I used, so they're attached to this post.

The spacewalk

The first is two astronauts working on the outside of a space station. Long-term caring can feel a lot like that: careful, demanding work in a place most people around you can't really imagine, a long way from everyone. But look closely and both of them are tethered, and there's a whole team on the ground talking them through every step. Nobody does a spacewalk alone.

Members then named their own tethers: a sister who calls every Sunday, a neighbor who sits with Dad for an hour so someone can get to the grocery store, the night thread here. Several people said they'd never thought of this community as part of their ground crew. It is.

The banknotes

The second picture is just a fan of banknotes, because money is the topic people apologize for raising. Reduced hours at work, gas and parking for appointments, special diets, equipment for the home: caring costs a lot, and most of it is invisible to everyone else.

  • Keep a simple log of care-related costs for one month. Most people are surprised by the total.
  • Ask the hospital social worker or a local caregiver organization what help you might qualify for. The rules vary a lot by country and state, and they're the people who know them.
  • Talk to your employer about flexible hours early, before you reach breaking point.

Thank you to everyone who came and spoke so honestly. The money thread from the second half is pinned in Caregivers Connect if you want to add to it, and we'll vote on a theme for the spring evening next month.

    • A quick follow-up: the money thread now has over sixty replies, including a really useful list of questions to bring to a hospital social worker. Thank you all. Voting for the spring evening's theme opens next week, and sleep is already in the lead.
