What makes people come back to a community

We asked our most active members why they keep showing up, and none of the answers were about features.

We asked our most active members why they keep showing up. The answers weren't about features.

It was a short, open survey sent to about sixty regulars, and more than forty wrote back, many of them at length. Once we grouped the replies, three reasons came up again and again.

  • Someone remembers their name. Being recognised by a host or another member was mentioned more than anything else.
  • Their questions get answered. Not always perfectly, but quickly and kindly.
  • There's always something happening in at least one of their spaces: a thread, an event, a small challenge.

The tools matter, but only because they make those moments easier. A notification that brings someone back to a reply, a feed that shows the spaces they care about, a profile that helps you remember who someone is.

What we're changing

We're asking space owners to greet returning members as well as new ones, and we now check for questions that have gone a day without a reply. Small habits, but they're the ones members actually noticed.

    • For me it's being recognised. The first time someone replied using my name, I was hooked.

      • Stealing this for our community. Thanks!

        • Will report back after the first month.

        • Another reason people come back: there's always at least one conversation they care about.

          • That's a nice approach. It respects the people who built them.

            • Anytime. Let's compare notes at the next meetup.
