Why every community needs a welcome ritual

The first visit decides a lot. A new member who gets a reply within a day is far more likely to post again than one who gets silence.

Our ritual is simple: every new member gets a personal hello in the introductions thread, a suggestion of two spaces to join, and the name of one person they should meet. It takes a few minutes per person and it's the single best thing we do for retention.

    • One detail I left out: the hello always comes from a person, never an automated message. New members can tell the difference straight away.

      • How do you keep it up once you get dozens of new members a week?

        • We rotate a small welcome crew. Five volunteers, each covering one day of the week.

        • Love the idea of suggesting one person to meet. That's the part most communities skip.

          • Agreed. The introduction is the ritual. Everything else is just onboarding.

            • If you add it to the playbook, track one number: how many newcomers post a second time within their first week. It's the clearest sign the welcome is working.
